Abstract

The sculpture group in the fountain Tres Gracias at Malaga was made of cast iron according to the model by the sculptor J.B Klagmann, and was made in the workshop of A. Durenne. The city hall acquired the group in 1978 to be located in the Constitución square. After several transfers the fountain is currently located in the General Torrijos square.
The bad state of preservation of the fountain has been archaeometrically evaluated by optical microscopy and field emission scanning electron microscopy observations combined with energy dispersive X?ray spectrometry, metallography and X?ray diffractometry. The proposal of possible restoration treatments has been tested with accelerated aging cycles in climatic and spray salt chambers.
The results obtained confirm that corrosion processes have occurred as a consequence of environmental conditions of the site and use of the fountain, and have allowed the design of the strategy and intervention criteria. In this sense, the main concepts to be highlighted are an execution based on minimum intervention and periodic preventive conservation over time under the responsibility of the monument’s legal managers.
