The contribution of digital tools to the study of the Silla del Papa (Tarifa, Cadiz, Spain)

Abstract

The hilltop site of La Silla del Papa, located on the northern shore of the Strait of Gibraltar in southern Andalusia, was occupied from the end of the 10^th or beginning of the 9^th century BC until it was abandoned at the end of the 1st century BC and replaced by Baelo Claudia, which was located on the coast 4 km away as the crow flies. Since 2014, the archaeological operations carried out at La Silla del Papa have uncovered the urban settlement and two cemeteries where funerary monuments dating from the 3^rd to the 1^st century BC have been uncovered. New technologies applied to archaeology have proved to be very useful to the study of this hillfort, on several scales: from a global point of view to understand its topographic setting and its organisation, right down to masonry details in order to achieve the restitution of the monuments.
