Intertextuality, cultural mediation and the use of footnotes. The case of Aminata Sow Fall’s «La Grève des bàttu» and its spanish translation

Abstract
The use of multilingual vocabulary and footnotes are part of Aminata Sow Fall's aesthetic proposal in La grève des bàttu. The way in which these footnotes configure an access to the intertextual and intercultural space of the text can be understood, from a linguistic-cognitive point of view, as metonymic. Their intertextual quality, which has to do with the constrictions of the note format itself, is an element that Sow Fall employs to propose an expanded reading to the non-native reader, from a position of non-interventionist mediator. In the way footnotes are used in the Spanish translation, a reconfiguration of these communicative strategies can be perceived, and substantial differences can be appreciated, both in the method of mediation employed and in the aesthetic and political outcome.
