Abstract
In this article, I will first discuss (section 1) the historical reasons why, in Brazil, instead of accepting the idea that poverty represents a serious violation of human rights or autonomy and dignity, two hegemonic narratives prevail: that of privilege and that of individual merit. These narratives, however, are not exclusive to Brazilian society but are also present in the relations between the Global North and South (section 2). Finally, I will confront the grammar of rights and the narrative of individual merit, highlighting their respective limits and, above all, how the hegemonic narrative of merit ends up neutralizing the emancipatory potential of the grammar of rights, effectively transforming rights into privileges and preventing extreme poverty from being seen as a violation of the basic rights of people in such a situation (section 3).
