Abstract

The work of Roland Barthes has always been open to various categorisations, two of which are structuralism and postructuralism. Although he accepted the label of structuralist using it himself as a reference to some of his texts, it was only regarding a very specific conception of structuralism which is closely linked to his interest in the mechanisms of signification. The aim of this article is to examine this conception of structuralism that Barthes developed and find out to what extent it can be applied to his own thoughts.
