Abstract

Democracy was not established completely in Spain until 1978, in contrast with many of its neighbors. But in Spanish modern history we can find strong ideological and political movements that promoted a democratic society. This paper defends that republicanism formed the philosophical basis of Democracy in modern Spain, because its thinkers and organizations produced, popularized and fought to apply democratic doctrines there. This paper studies Spanish republicanism from its beginning in approximately 1840 until the great exile in 1939.
