The Paradigm of Archipelago: Mediterranean and Politics of Relationships

Abstract
The end of the Cold War and the process of constituting the European Union,
still underway today, could have been an
extraordinary opportunity to rediscover
the Mediterranean political and cultural
heritage, made up of bonds in which the
‘contamination’ of cultures is fundamental. The most common Mediterranean
‘feeling’ leads towards openness, hospitality, movement, travel, between peninsulas and islands, between archipelagos.
Unfortunately, however, especially recently, the Mediterranean has increasingly become a ‘frontier’ between worlds
conceived as hostile, from which ‘fortress-Europe’ only wants to defend itself.
What I would like to propose, through a
geo-philosophical reading of the Mediterranean — starting from the place where
I myself live, i.e. Sicily — is the rediscovery of the Mediterranean’s most proper
bond, that of Archipelago. Relaunching
the proposal of a ‘Mediterranean alternative’, of a Europe-Archipelago, means, in
fact, thinking about the possibility of a
cohabitation based on the pluriverse character, which history has already handed
over to us, but which we must rediscover
and make fruitful again.
