INTEGRITY OF SPORTS IN BRAZIL: AN ANALYSIS OF NATIONAL SPORTS GOVERNING BODIES AND THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT’S ANTI-DOPING PROCEDURES
Keywords:

This study aims to assess whether the anti-doping procedures implemented by national sports governing bodies and the government in Brazil effectively ensure the integrity of sports. The research is descriptive and qualitative in nature, employing semi-structured interviews as methods of data collection. Sixteen interviews were conducted with representatives from three distinct groups: Group I, consisting of national sports governing bodies representatives; Group II, comprising members of the anti-doping expert community; and Group III, including other relevant stakeholders. Content analysis was used to process the gathered information. The study reveals that anti-doping education initiatives in Brazil are implemented both in-person and online. These efforts are coordinated by national sports governing bodies, the anti-doping expert community, and other stakeholders responsible for anti-doping. These actions are conducted independently and in partnership with universities and municipal sports departments. While these governing bodies and governmental institutions adhere to international regulations, the absence of robust evaluation processes hinders the availability of comprehensive data to monitor the effectiveness of these initiatives. Moreover, the misconceptions held by some managers involved in the research highlight the need for a clearer understanding of anti-doping within the sports community, which is crucial for fostering an anti-doping culture and ensuring the integrity of sports in Brazil.
