The church of the Holy Sepulchre, located in Cagliari, boasts a huge lateral chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Piety and decorated with a magnificent altarpiece made in golden and polychrome wood. The chapel, commissioned by Antonio López de Ayala, Count of Fuensalida and viceroy of Sardinia (1683-1686), is one of the few remaining examples of viceregal art patronage in the island. The principal aim of this essay is to present an in-depth analysis of its decorative program, to understand López de Ayala’s role as a patron. At the same time, the research takes a closer look at his art collection, which can be examined thanks to the discovery of different inventories. Finally, with this case-study, I propose an overall reflection on viceroys’ patronage in Sardinia in the 17th century.

The friendship between Emilio Castelar and Francisco de Paula Canalejas was founded on their affinity for liberal ideas, but it was also questioned by disagreements regarding the philosophical foundation of the solutions they intended for Spain (Hegelian and Krausist, respectively). However, the turbulent development of the Democratic Sexennium and the crisis of the First Republic brought them together again in a desperate attempt to save the republican project and, with it, the liberal reformist proposal for Spanish society at that time. Today, 150 years later, the intrastory of how both characters experienced the coup not only deserves to be told but also offers a valuable contribution to the knowledge of such a relevant episode in the history of Spain and its repercussions on it.

Abortion has been a process that many women have had to resort to throughout history. Its practice has, however, been condemned in almost all societies, both at a social and legislative level. In Franco’s Spain, the practice of abortion was condemned both for those women who underwent it and for the people who performed it. However, this did not prevent women from undergoing it, especially in the 1960s when a phenomenon that came to be called “abortion tourism” occurred, reflecting the changes that were taking place in terms of sexuality. Oral sources, as well as other types of studies, shed light on
the experiences of the practice of abortion in Spain, both when it was illegal and when it was partially legalized, and in countries such as Great Britain. This practice is understood as a challenge to the hegemonic model of sexuality.

Henry Kissinger in the war in Western Sahara and East Timor

This paper analyzes the role played by Kissinger in the conflicts in Western Sahara and East Timor. The Secretary of State and national security adviser during the end of Nixon’s term and under the Ford presidency was decisive for Indonesia and Morocco to undertake the invasion of both territories. The article shows the conversations held by Kissinger with Suharto and Hasan II, and with other heads of the respective governments, and through them the active role played by the Secretary of State in the beginning of both wars is demonstrated. The reasons of imperial geopolitics and the fight against communism were behind the decisive North American support for the expansionist policies of its allies.

The King of Heroes: Gilgamesh in the anime and manga Fate

This article considers the role of Japanese anime and manga as essential vehicles of cultural transmission. These are forms of media which also allow for the analysis of the reception of Antiquity in contemporary popular culture. To this end, we address the case of the famous Gilgamesh, king of the city of Uruk in Mesopotamia at the beginning of the 3rd millennium BC, who is also featured as a character in different creations of the multimedia franchise Fate. These fictional products show a remarkable reinterpretation of the historical character, who is now turned into an archetype of the sh?nen hero and, therefore, reworked according to the tastes and preferences of contemporary audiences, which
are mostly made up of teenagers.
