Abstract

Cuba's military intervention in the Angolan war of independence raised a great deal of interest amidst rethinking and questioning in the literature. For many analysts of international politics, Cuba's support for the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) was a manoeuvre by the Soviet Union against the advance of capitalist ideology. From this point of view, Cuba was seen as a puppet of the Soviet Union in Angola. This article attempts to show that Cuba's military support for the MPLA responded to strategic needs and objectives of Cuban foreign policy. It provides another view of Cuba during the Cold War and of the so-called ‘Third World’ countries, not as mere satellites of the two ideological blocs in conflict, but as autonomous actors with their own agenda and their own vision of the course of international events.
