Ad ignorantiam: variants and uses of the argument from ignorance

Abstract
Although it appears in some catalogues of fallacies, it is also possible to recognize contexts and uses of the argumentum ad ignorantiam in which it is not fallacious, but rather quite reasonable. In order to contribute to the discussion on arguments from ignorance, this article aims to expand the taxonomy of appeals to ignorance. First, the formal schemes of the argument considered in the bibliography are systematized. Next, some of its variants are considered according to the argument component (data, warrant or backing) and the stage of the argumentation involved (confrontation, opening, argumentation and conclusion). Finally, different uses of the appeal to ignorance with different scope are characterized (in addition to the traditional limited cases, other hyperbolic and strategic variants). By recounting some modalities of argumentation from ignorance, not only the ambivalent link with ignorance in our philosophical tradition becomes understandable, but also some of the current forms of manipulation and fabrication of ignorance.
