Abstract

The introduction and progressive development of Primary Health and/or Family Medicine programmes in Spanish Medicine Faculties is a relatively recent event associated to the Spanish Primary Health Reform based on Health Centres.
The Faculty of Medicine of UAM has been one of the first ones that incorporated in its Curricula activities related to this matter.
There are three kinds of activities:
A) One month rotation in a Health Centre in the sixth year of training, compulsory for all the students. There are 15 Health Centres attached to the University and a associated Professor in each of them, formalized by means of the INSALUD/UAM agreement.
B) Optative course in the sixth year of training. It is based on a 20 hours course orientated to show the peculiarities of the Family Physician's job. This course is chosen by an average of 50 students per year.
C) Optative subject of free choice in the third year of training. Within the framework of the new Study Plan an optative subject of 20 hours has been offered to students in the third year. Its purpose is that the student has an early contact with the patient in his/her natural environment (family, neighbourhood, workplace).
