Abstract
Security is a central issue in contemporary societies. The global political and economic developments in recent decades have encouraged the spread of the conviction that today social, political, ecological and individual risks are multiplying as never before in history. In this brief essay we provide a short overview of theoretical and academic debate and at the same time, we relate it to the thought of the philosopher who, more than others, focused on the issue of fear and security to support his political theories: Thomas Hobbes.
