Genetic and morphological relationships of Thesium in the Canary Islands. Thesium palmense, a new species to conserve
Keywords:
endemism, endangered species, hemiparasitism, microsatellites, SantalaceaeAbstract
Thesium sect. Kunkeliella is a group of Canarian endemisms with a restricted distribution and a high degree of threat, with one of the species described to date already considered extinct. The discovery of a new taxon in La Palma has led us to genetically characterize the species in the Canary Islands both at intra- and inter-specific levels, while reviewing the morphological characteristics of the group. All this has contributed to describe and consider the new taxon as a different species called Thesium palmense and to know the genetic relationships between all the species of the genus in the Canary Islands. In addition, it will serve as the basis for in situ and ex situ conservation actions that may be derived from all known populations
