Abstract
In this article I offer an introduction to my recent book “Logic as a tool for reasoning: Ampliative Reasoning in Creativity, Cognition and Inference” (Aliseda 2014). Its title aims to be as suggestive as informative. Logic as a tool for reasoning is the thesis I defend in this research, which I show through three dimensions of reason: creative, cognitive and inferential, each of which constitutes a section of this book. While the first one is motivated by the question Does scientific discovery have a logic? the second one manifests itself through epistemic processes of knowledge acquisition and revision. The third dimension of reason, the inferential one, concerns the challenge of designing ampliative logical systems capturing some aspects of previous dimensions; the analysis of this goal is the underlying motivation of the third section of this book.
Keywords: Logic, reason, discovery, creativity, cognition, ampliative reasoning.
